Great News! To get the whole of Hornby-with-Farleton connected to B4RN we where going to need at least £80k. We made a very good start and raised £40k in the first 2 months, that total has continued to ‘creep up’ and we can now announce that we have made it! A big thank you to every one that has made any type of financial commitment and with you financial support (and a lot of voluntary diggers) we are going to be able to provide B4RN to the whole of Hornby-with-Farleton.
So what is B4RN?
B4RN is a professionally designed fibre optic broadband network , registered as a non-profit community benefit society, and run by a dedicated local team with the support of local landowners and volunteers. Almost £1million has already been invested in B4RN by the local community – including people from Hornby-with-Farleton. Around 500 homes are now live, with another 500 due online soon. This includes most properties in Arkholme, Gressingham and Wray which are now enjoying future-proof internet speeds up to 200 times faster than the local average with all the benefits outlined below.
B4RN uses FTTP (Fibre To The Premises) which can transfer larger amounts of data faster than any other technology; this makes it the best system for the Internet, phone-calls & working from home. It’s also the most reliable system because its weatherproof fibre is buried safely underground, so avoiding high maintenance overhead wires.
Connecting to B4RN during Hornby & Farleton’s upcoming roll-out will cost you only £150 – this is a one-time installation charge ‘special offer’ available to anyone who connects while installations are being rolled out in your area. However, if you ask to be connected after we’ve passed you then new trenches will need digging, in some cases with special contractors brought in to cross public highways, and of course it would mean B4RN technical engineers would have to return to specifically connect your individual property. Charged at cost this could be much more expensive – so we urge everyone to seriously consider connecting while the work is ongoing.
All you need to pay is a one-time £150 fee for installation, service is then optional.
The benefits of B4RN service at £30/month go beyond having one of the fastest internet connections in the world; it can also be used for all your phone calls and removes the need for a normal BT phone line, thus saving money. It can be used for keeping in touch with family using video calls, watching TV and film; live and on demand in high definition. Research has also shown it’s likely to improve property saleability, and value (quoted as a 5% gain by reports in the national press).
Investors get additional benefits including EIS (Enterprise Initiative Scheme) tax relief of 30% against income tax. Invest £1500 or more and get free connection (worth £150). Shares must be held for 3 years minimum but will thereafter receive a small dividend. Our local shareholders are the bedrock of B4RN and have a democratic say in how B4RN is run. And don’t forget, as a community benefit society B4RN’s profits will be reinvested in the network and local community projects.
